Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova
Russia has expressed support for resolving tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan through diplomatic dialogue, saying it is willing to assist if both countries agree to such efforts.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow supports a political solution to disagreements between the two neighboring countries. Speaking during a press briefing, she indicated that Russia is prepared to help reduce tensions, provided both sides are open to its involvement.
Zakharova also highlighted Russia’s intention to strengthen cooperation with Afghanistan in several security-related areas, including counterterrorism, efforts to combat drug trafficking, and broader security matters.
She referred to a military and technical cooperation agreement signed by Russia and Afghanistan in Moscow in May. According to her remarks, the agreement is intended to enhance Afghanistan’s defense capabilities and support counterterrorism efforts.
However, the spokesperson did not outline specific steps Russia might take to facilitate dialogue between Kabul and Islamabad or explain what form its assistance could involve.
The statement comes as Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to face security challenges and strained bilateral relations. Moscow has maintained diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Russia’s latest remarks signal its stated willingness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions, although any mediation initiative would depend on the positions and willingness of both countries.
